Description
Up for sale, 1962 Frejus TdF Frameset with pantographed crankset and headset. Frame is 58.5cm c/c, 61.5 to top of collar. Top tube: 57cm, Head tube: 17 cm. Wheelbase, approx. 105cm. Crankset is Magistroni with Simplex chainrings, 52 /47. Headset is Magistroni/Frejus; Seat collar: Magistroni (Olmo). Comes with short 26.4mm steel pillar (I have a long alloy one if you need it). Aside from one small ding on the top of the Bottom Bracket cage (see photo), Frame has no dents. Original paint, Team Ignis colors. The red panels are in pretty good shape, grey paint is ragged, especially on the top tube and stays. Chrome is so so, acceptable on the lugs but mediocre on the fork crown. BB and HS were repacked in 2020 and have less than 100 miles. Frame rides straight "no hands". Not the lightest frame in the world but very comfortable and stable. These were made with either Falck or a combination of Columbus and Falck tubing. I would say the highlights of the frameset are the aero forks, the gorgeous pantographed headset and the elegant seatlug/seat collar combination. All ready to be built for a classic vintage/Eroica machine. Crankset itself is worth a small fortune these days. The frame is too small for me, which is why I'm parting with it.Frejus was founded in the late 19th century in Torino, Italy and they produced bikes until the late 80's when Bianchi bought Legnano, which then owned Frejus. Frejus bikes won all the major races of the Pro calendar, including the Giro, TdF (in 1950) and Worlds.
In the Italian hierarchy of the day, Frejus was below Cinelli, Masi and Galmozzi but on par with Bianchi and Legnano.
This frame is basically the same model produced in the 1950's. The top of the line racing models were the Supercorsa and the Tour de France. The SC had a fancier seat lug and grease points on the head tube and BB but otherwise, the bikes were very similar. The late 50's and early 60's were one of the high points of the marque when Ignis rode these bikes before switching to Masi. Baldini, Poblet and Bobet were among those who rode Frejus bikes at the time. By the late sixties, Frejus bikes became undistinguishable from Legnanos and the brand started to fade slowly.
