    Description

    1966 Chevelle Copo Big Block Chevy BBC 396 4 Bolt Main 427 (4.25 Bore) Block 3855962 962
Cleaned and checked for cracks. Number one cylinder has a small crack and will need sleeve. Machine shop said block is in excellent condition and measures up to a very tight 427 bore with room to hone still. They also did a sonic test on block for thickness and it passed with great numbers and can even be bored .030 safely still. You can see sonic test report in picture #12. This is a great original block that very well could be one of those few 427 blocks GM did for a few Chevelles and Corvettes in 65 and 66.
Block is 4.25 bore making it a 427. This could be a factory bore because it still has eye brow valve clearance grooves on block deck. Those would be totally gone if block started out as a 396 then bored out to a 427. Selling cheap because we just don't know for sure. I know the suffix code is for 396 Chevelle but GM wasn't perfect and did not have one for this rare Copo 427 Chevelle. I even had a 962 block that was 2 bolt main not 4 bolt and they never made them but I had one. GM also made a 961 4 bolt main suppose to be 2 bolt and again I have owned a few of them. So during the first couple years of producing the big block there was a lot of mistakes or research going on. I have read stories about GM made a few 962 block 427 engines for the 1966 Chevelle and Corvette but who knows.
There was a few 427s that found their way in to late 66 Chevelles due to a strike at the Tonawanda plant. OPGI in California has a numbers correct 66 Coupe with such an engine. Interestingly the car was still badged as a 396. Extremely rare.
I'm not selling this as one of those original factory 427 blocks but you can always use this to clone one. I do have the factory GM 427 pistons for this engine if you want to keep this correct.
