    Description

Vintage Metal Mug with a series of three scenes
a cow is used to lure a bull; they mate, and a rear leg is then roped; this is sometimes called the "Peaceful Cup" or the "Quiet Cup".
    Vapheio
is an ancient site in Laconia, Greece, on the right bank of the Eurotas, some five miles south of Sparta. It is famous for its Tholos or "Beehive" tomb
excavated in 1889. This cup is a remake repousse of one of the original gold cups sometimes known as the
"Peaceful Cup" or the "Quiet Cup".
"Vapheio cup" is now used as a term for the shape of the gold cups in Aegean archaeology, which is found in pottery as well as metalwork.
The cup is gold in color only. There are no markings on the cup. I'm not sure what metal it is made from.

Vintage:Earlier reproduction; still has original lead seal attached; Stamped “Hand Made” on handle; no other markings/stampings/etchings Condition: No damage or repairs; unpolished; nice patina; small amounts of verdigris visible Material: Appears to be made of a brass/copper alloy (it’s not magnetic, so it’s not tin) Brief History: A Vapheio cup has a flat base, straight flaring sides, and a single handle and is a type of Mycenaean drinking vessel named after the find of two gold examples in a tholos burial at Vapheio near Sparta, southern Greece. The original gold examples were decorated in relief with scenes of bulls. On one cup the bulls come quietly, while the other shows the bulls displaying ferocious animosity towards their captors. This cup depicts the animosity version . The originals are in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens. Vapheio cups are found in middle Minoan levels in Crete and were popular on the mainland in the late Helladic period.
